MSc in Mechanical Engineering
Overview: The MSc in Mechanical Engineering is designed to develop advanced technical expertise in key areas such as materials, computational fluid dynamics, control systems, renewable energy, structural mechanics, and additive manufacturing. The program aims to prepare graduates to solve complex engineering challenges in sectors such as aerospace, defence, maritime, energy, and manufacturing, while promoting innovation and ethical decision-making in line with Oman’s Vision 2040.
Admission Requirements: Master of Science (MSc)
MTC, in partnership with the University of Portsmouth (UK), offers world-class postgraduate engineering programs. To ensure academic success, all applicants must meet the following entry standards:
- Academic Requirements
Standard Entry (Omani Nationals)
- Degree: A recognized Bachelor’s degree in a relevant Engineering or Science discipline (BSc or BEng).
- Classification: Minimum Second Class (2:2) honours or equivalent.
- Grade/GPA: A minimum grade of “Good” or a GPA of 2.7 (out of 4.0) / Grade B.
- International applicants must hold an equivalent qualification approved by MOE, supported by an official equivalency certificate.
- The undergraduate degree must be in a relevant discipline aligned with the chosen Master’s programme (e.g., Electrical and Electronics Engineering for MSc in Electronic and Electrical Engineering).
Alternative Entry Route (RPEL)
Applicants holding a GPA between 2.3 and 2.69 may be considered for admission via the Recognition of Prior Experiential Learning (RPEL) pathway.
- Requirement: A minimum of 2 years of relevant professional experience post-graduation is mandatory.
- Process: Candidates must demonstrate how their professional practice has bridged the gap to Master’s level readiness.
Note: RPEL admission is subject to a specialized portfolio review and internal quality audits. For detailed requirements and the “Evidence of Learning” checklist, please contact the RPEL Coordinator directly (email).
Additional mandatory document for all candidates:
- Reference letter and personal statement (for civilian applicants)
- Reference letter, personal statement, and NOC (for Ministry of Defense applicants)
- English Language Proficiency
As the programs are delivered and assessed in English in alignment with UK standards, all applicants must provide evidence of English proficiency:
- IELTS Academic: An Overall Score of 6.0.
- Component Minimum: No individual element (Reading, Writing, Listening, Speaking) lower than 5.5.
- IELTS Exemption / Alternatives:
- Exemption: English language requirements are waived for applicants holding a Bachelor’s degree taught in English from a native English-speaking country. The Selection Board reserves the right to apply this exemption.
- In alignment with the requirement for an Academic IELTS score of 6.0 (with no individual component below 5.5), MTC recognizes the following international English language tests as equivalent qualifications:

Validity: All test results must be valid at the time of application and typically must have been taken within two years of the programme start date.

Applicants scoring marginally below these equivalents (e.g., IELTS 5.5 or TOEFL iBT 74-78) may still be considered for a Conditional Offer, subject to the successfully providing the improved score before the deadline.

- 20 OMR Application Fee (Non-refundable)
- 3,700 OMR Tuition fees
- 10% Tuition fee discount for Ministry of Defense staff
- The student must pay total study fee of 3700* Omani Riyal, which must be settled in (4) instalments as outlined in the table below:
